Microsoft Outlook, the standard communications platform for business, now works for Macs and PCs. I got an in-depth demo from Excel for Mac product manager Gavin Shearer, and I have been testing a final version for several weeks, focusing on Excel as a quant tool on the Mac.
It is fast, unbelievably flexible and the backbone of just about any successful business I am aware off. Problem was, running Excel on the Mac was a royal pain. Spreadsheets often would not export properly, charts and formulas would go south and for some nutty reason performance was flat. Basically, if you needed Excel, you needed a PC. Not anymore. Microsoft has worked hard to address the issues of using Excel on Apple gear.
Launching is faster and all-around performance with large-calculation heavy files is better. There are improved plotting features for turning data into charts and graphs and slicker compatibility with Office running on a PC. In my testing, I found everything from complex statistical models, such as traditional Monte Carlo simulations, to basic uploads to be faster and more robust. And that speed gain was not just on fancy new Macs.
To me, power features such as pivot tables and conditional formatting are worth the price alone. This is still Microsoft, a big fat company with millions of lines of code and zillions of hours of history that must be accounted for when they make products.
So there is some way goofy stuff here. Remarkably, this latest upgrade is still bit code; If you need real processing horsepower -- that is, native, bit solutions -- Office for Mac is not for you. Also, you will need to get right with Microsoft's Ribbon layout, which drives many old-school Excel heads over the edge.
Yes, you will have to poke through the Ribbon interface to find your favorite functions. And no, you cannot strip down this code to look like the Windows XP version you love. And be ready to spend some money. And if you want your group to collaborate, you face the flurry of pricey Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint server licences.
If you are upgrading your business infrastructure, give Excel for Mac the once-over. Microsoft deserves real credit here by finally letting you use it in both PC and Mac environments as a fast, robust work tool. Just be prepared to spend to get into the software and deal with a new version of the program you -- and I -- love. Was this information helpful? Yes No. Thank you! Any more feedback?

Use the Paste Special command to copy and paste special cell contents or attributes. Change the width of columns so that you can see all the data in cells.
Learn the elements of a formula as well as how to enter a formula on a sheet. Add chart and axis titles, change the axis scale, add data labels, and more. Use error bars to indicate potential error amounts in relation to each data point. Use Excel for Mac to check out a SharePoint file so that only you can make changes.

I'm starting the financial modeling package and was wondering if it would make a difference. I use a Mac, would it be worth developing the "muscle memory" for Mac if PCs are prevalent in industry? Any Excel for Mac users out there? Excel for mac can be done, however it is not the same as pc. It sucks. Excel for PC is way easier to use and faster in my opinion.
Excel for mac is just not the same. Have a mac and used "numbers" and the Microsoft " Excel " but you are faster with a Windows computer. In the industry, you need to know how to use excel on a windows computer. It would be a waste of time to get used to the different shortcuts and the unpractical handling. I'm a mac user and fan but you should learn excel on a PC. Just get something that allows you to run a virtual PC like Parallels.
The only thing that would not be different I believe is if you are learning Visual Basic for Applications. The coding language should still be the same, but I agree with other users for everything else. I am an avid Apple and Mac user in my personal life, but it is almost impossible to use excel on a Mac compared to a PC.
They are surprisingly different. Mac Excel is just incomparable to the real thing. Mastering Excel on a PC is a great investment to smoothly transition into many finance fields.
